Papers, 1905-1949 (bulk 1924-1944).

The MacDonald papers consist of holograph and typescript manuscripts, notes and notebooks, correspondence, and clippings that help illuminate his creative output as a writer of fiction and biography between 1905 and 1944. Only three of MacDonald's works are represented in this collection: a biography, The Life of George MacDonald and His Wife (1924), an unpublished short story "Pieces of Silver" (n.d.), and notes on William Blake which may have been incorporated into his The Sanity of William Blake (1908). The second series reflects the collaborative effort between MacDonald and Derrick Leon to publish Ruskin, the Great Victorian. Included are drafts of the manuscript, two letter books containing transcriptions of Ruskin correspondence (1863-1873), and correspondence concerning the eventual publication of this work in 1949. The final series contains clippings that indicate MacDonald's interests in recreation and natural science. Reviews of four of his works are also present in this series.
